Rashford Charges Manchester United On Improvement Following Slow Start To The Season

Marcus Rashford has warned his Manchester United teammates they “have to improve” in order to achieve their goals this season.

The 22-year-old scored his first Premier League goal of the campaign with a mazing run and a deft finish to put United 2-1 up against Brighton on Saturday.

It was strike of huge significance for the club, as it marked their 10,000th goal across all competitions since their foundation in 1878.

But the occasion looked set to be tarnished as Solly March equalised in the 95th minute – and it took a Bruno Fernandes penalty in the 10th minute of added time for United to secure victory.

When made aware of the importance of his goal, Rashford shrugged off the achievement and urged the Red Devils to step up their performances.

“10,000 goals? It’s funny the way it happened as well, but we have to take things in our stride,” he told MUTV .

“We have to use these three points as motivation to improve and keep getting better. We have to improve if we want to hit our targets for the season.

“We had a slow start in the last league game [the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace ] and it’s more important to pick up points. It’s more important that we lost the first league game, we had to win today.

“It doesn’t matter how we won, we got the three points and we’ll move forward and improve.”

Rashford also admitted United were “definitely lucky” to leave the Amex with three points but praised his team for not giving up despite the sucker punch of conceding late on.

He added: “It’s probably the craziest game we’ve been involved in.

“They were hitting the post, the crossbar, four or five times. [There was] VAR for the penalties too, and obviously our penalty at the end.

“We were definitely lucky to get the three points but, even when they equalised, we showed a lot of character and desire to keep pushing forward. We forced a corner out of nothing, a throw-in on the left-side.

“It was Harry [Maguire’s] determination to win the ball, he won the penalty for us and Bruno tucked it away.”
