Chelsea’s loaned-out misfit Danny Drinkwater posts a photo of himself CELEBRATING just minutes after news broke of Frank Lampard’s sacking… but quickly DELETES the shot after a backlash from angry fans
The midfielder was sidelined by Lampard and failed to feature under his leadership as he was loaned out twice last season to Burnley and Aston Villa before being shipped out again this campaign to Turkish outfit Kasimpasa.
And now Drinkwater has appeared to stick the boot into Lampard, who was axed by Chelsea on Monday after a torrid run of results, by posting a picture of him looking elated during his time at the Foxes in an Instagram story.
Drinkwater’s post, which has since been deleted by the 30-year-old, led to plenty of anger from Chelsea fans – who accused him of disrespecting his former boss.
One supporter urged the club to ‘sack Drinkwater while you’re at it’, while another mocked the player for his post and claimed he would be sent out again should Thomas Tuchel take over from Lampard.
‘Drinkwater celebrating Lampard getting sacked as if [Thomas] Tuchel won’t send him out on loan. At least he let you play with the academy team. Count your blessings.’
Another said Drinkwater’s photo was ‘classlessness’ and summed up why he found himself out of favour at the club.
‘Danny Drinkwater showing the level of disrespect and classlessness that saw him dropped from the squad. Good riddance.’
Another wrote: ‘Danny Drinkwater you absolute b***end. Hope you’re happy playing in the Turkish B league.’ And one called him ‘an awful footballer and an awful person’ – calling on the club to end his contract.
‘Danny Drinkwater is not just an awful footballer but an awful person. Our worst ever player, terminate his contract whilst you’re at it @ChelseaFC’
Drinkwater has since responded to the wave of criticism and insists his post was only intended to show that he misses playing football – stressing that Lampard was ‘someone I looked up to hugely as a player’.
Drinkwater’s Chelsea career failed to get off the ground. He played just 23 times across three seasons and suffered two controversy-filled loans at both Burnley and Aston Villa.
He was the victim of an assault outside a nightclub during his time at Turf Moor and was involved in a training-ground bust-up with team-mate Jota after joining Villa in the same season.
In this campaign, he made headlines for all the wrong reasons after kicking out at Tottenham youth star Alfie Devine in an Under-23 game – paving the way for a swift exit from Stamford Bridge.
