The upcoming AFCON tournament will make use of the infamous VAR system when the competition kicks off in Cameroon next month. AFCON will run from 9 January 2022 to 6 February 2022.
Joy Sports reports that all 52 games at the upcoming AFCON will make use of the VAR system. In the previous tournament, only the quarter-finals made use of VAR, SportyBet confirmed on Twitter.
The decision has received the support of some on Twitter.
Others though had their doubts.
Should AFCON be worried about VAR’s track record?
The VAR system is no stranger to controversy and has constantly made headlines over its use in the English Premier League. Twitter users and even companies have never been shy when it comes to voicing their opinion about VAR. @Specsavers have even used VAR to help promote their business.
VAR was in the headlines again following the Liverpool vs Tottenham game and more recently for the Norwich and Arsenal clash. Referees monitoring the VAR in particular have come under fire for their decision to focus on some decisions while ignoring others of a similar nature.
