Sergio Ramos ‘may be forced to RETIRE’ due to continuous calf injuries as former France doctor claims PSG defender, on £10m per year, has fragile muscles after wear and tear of 19 seasons at the highest level.

  • Sergio Ramos may have to retire due to injuries, according to a report in France
  • Ramos has only played five times since joining PSG from Real Madrid last year
  • A report in newspaper Le Parisien said Ramos had ‘old calf syndrome’
  • The 35-year-old has caused serious damage to calf muscles in both of his legs

Sergio Ramos has spent most of the last 12 months battling to be fit and there are now fears that the legendary Spanish defender might have to retire early due to his constant injuries.

Ramos has only managed to make five appearances for Paris Saint-Germain since switching from Real Madrid last year, completing 90 minutes just twice.

The centre-back, who turns 36 next month, is currently recovering from a calf injury and is expected to miss the mouth-watering Champions League last-16 first leg clash against his old club Real on February 15, while he will also struggle to make the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos has been limited to just five appearances since joining PSG from Real Madrid last year

And according to a report in newspaper Le Parisien, there are genuine fears that Ramos will be forced to hang up his boots far earlier than planned due to his constant injury problems.

The report, headlined ‘Injuries – the end of Ramos?’ said the problem the Spaniard is currently recovering from is very similar to the one he sustained at the end of last season, which ruled him out for Real Madrid’s title run-in and Champions League semi-final defeat to Chelsea and led Luis Enrique to leave him out of Spain’s squad for Euro 2020.

The only difference is that is in the right leg rather than the left, meaning both of his calf muscles have taken a serious beaten in the last year.

Jean-Marcel Ferret, a former doctor with the France national team, described Ramos’ problem as ‘old calf syndrome’.

‘The injuries are very difficult because you can never predict how they will evolve,’ Ferret told Le Parisien.

‘It’s all about the configuration of the calf muscle. You have to consider how the muscle has aged given the blows Ramos has taken in has career while playing at the highest level for 19 seasons and how much that has weakened his calves.’

Ferret said that the tissues in Ramos’ calves have lost their flexibility and are ever more fragile.

The defender may also have caused more damage during his rehabilitation work, weakening one leg while trying to strengthen the other.

The report also said that while injuries have been Ramos’ worst enemy during his time at PSG, he has not helped his recovery with his repeated trips to Madrid, such as him returning to the Spanish capital last week to attend the launch of his new gym.

Ramos was one of a handful of star names PSG signed last summer in a sensational transfer window in which they also brought in Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Lionel Messi.

With four Champions League winners medals plus two European Championships, a World Cup and four LaLiga crowns in his trophy cabinet among a slew of other prizes, it was thought that the Spaniard could help PSG take the final step in their mission to win Europe’s biggest prize,

But he has not been able to feature at all in the Champions League and has only made four appearances in Ligue 1 plus one outing in the French Cup.

He has still managed to make his mark, however, for both the right and wrong reasons.

The Spaniard launched his own gym, Sergio Ramos by John Reed, in Madrid last week

He was sent off in a 1-1 draw at Lorient for picking up two yellow cards in the space of five minutes, having come off the bench at the start of the second half.

But he has managed to get on the scoresheet, netting in a 4-0 win over Stade de Reims last month.

His joy was short-lived, however, and barely a week later during a training session he pulled up with his latest calf injury.
