Liverpool had to hold on against 10-man Inter Milan to progress into the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League despite losing 1-0 at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men qualify into the last eight 2-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg 2-0 at the San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez netted a second half stunner to give the reigning Serie A champions hope of a comeback.

But Inter’s hopes of a fight back was dashed when Alexis Sanchez was sent off after picking up his second yellow card for a clumsy tackle on Fabinho.

With the man in advantage and the game somewhat back under Liverpool’s control, Salah hit the post for the second time of the evening with just over ten minutes remaining.

Liverpool had further chances to put the tie beyond Inter, but held on to qualify for the next round, despite losing for the first time in 15 matches.

And at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich thrashed Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg 7-1 to advance into the next round.

Robert Lewandowski was the star of the night as he hit a historic hat-trick for the Bundesliga champions.

Lewandowski completed the hat-trick within 23 minutes; the earliest treble ever scored by a player in UEFA Champions League history from the start of a match, overtaking Marco Simone for Milan v Rosenborg in 1996 (24 mins). 

Other scorers for Bayern on the night are Thomas Muller (brace), Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.
