Aisha Yesufu slams NASS over alarming rise in Nigerian soldiers’ deaths

Activist lawyer Aisha Yesufu has expressed deep concern over the rising casualties among Nigerian soldiers, calling on the National Assembly of Nigeria to take urgent action.

She described the loss of troops as occurring at a “sickeningly alarming rate”, questioning whether lawmakers, elected to protect citizens, are fulfilling their duties.

According to her, the situation is worsened by a passive legislature. She warned:

“It is one thing not to have a Commander-in-Chief; it is another disastrous thing to have a passive and controlled National Assembly.”

Yesufu asked whether the National Assembly had summoned the relevant authorities to explain the situation and what legislative measures are in place to safeguard soldiers and their families.

She also raised concerns about the welfare of families left behind by fallen soldiers, urging clarity on the support systems available to them.

Her statement comes amid growing public concern over security challenges and the safety of military personnel deployed across Nigeria.

“We are losing our soldiers at a sickeningly alarming rate. Where is the National Assembly? They were voted to be the people’s representatives and protect the interests of the people!

Who have they summoned to ask them what is going on? What laws have they made to ensure soldiers and their families are protected?

What happens to the families of our slain heroes? What is the National Assembly doing to protect their interests?” she wrote.

Yesufu’s comments underline urgent questions about the welfare and protection of Nigeria’s troops and the accountability of the nation’s lawmakers.
