APC raises alarm, urges INEC to cancel Kano rerun and bye-elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately cancel the bye-elections for the Shanono/Bagwai constituency and the rerun election in Ghari constituency, Kano State.

In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party said the demand became necessary following what it described as “widespread extreme violence and election disruption by armed thugs across several polling units in the Shanono, Bagwai, and Ghari constituencies.”

According to APC, reports from Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas, as well as Ghari constituency, indicated that voters were forced to flee polling areas as security personnel deployed to maintain order were overwhelmed by the violence.

The party argued that the scale of violence had made the prospects of a credible election impossible.

“Proceeding with the Shanono/Bagwai Kano State Constituency bye-election and Ghari rerun election in the atmosphere of utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation will be against democratic dictates of free, fair and peaceful election and set a dangerous precedent for undesirable and unacceptable electoral heist,” APC stated.

The party urged INEC to uphold the principles of democracy by cancelling the polls and ensuring that future elections are conducted in an environment free of violence and intimidation.
