Aremu Afolayan makes U-turn, apologises to Nigerians after Tinubu’s appraisal backlash

Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has made a U‑turn after his earlier comments about Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sparked major backlash.

In a heartfelt video shared on his Instagram page, he apologised to Nigerians, admitting that he spoke without thinking and had also been misunderstood.

“I am so sober at the moment. First, to all Nigerians, all well‑wishers, all the people that wish this country goes better, please forgive me, I am sorry,” he said.

Aremu clarified that he was not paid to defend the government, denying circulating rumours. He also spoke candidly about the insecurity in the country, which inspired his earlier comments.

He revealed that his words were influenced by a personal experience: his best friend’s mother was kidnapped in Nigeria, and millions were paid for her release.

The ordeal left him shaken and frustrated with the government’s handling of security.

“I am not supposed to bring this matter here… We paid millions for her release,” he said. “What I was trying to say in the video is someone tells you ‘nothing is happening, be calm’—don’t believe them, they are reading a script. That’s all I meant,” he added.

This comes after the actor had made comments during a political support event linked to President Tinubu’s 2027 campaign, stating that the president is doing a good job and that there was no case of insecurity in the state.

Aremu, however, apologised for hurting Nigerians with his previous statements, acknowledging that the support he received in his career and businesses came from the people, not the government.

He announced that he would withdraw from anything political or related to Tinubu, promising to be more careful in future.
