Arsenal shock Chelsea to dent WSL title hopes

Chelsea’s bid to retain the Women’s Super League title suffered a major setback on Saturday as they were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, handing Manchester City a significant advantage in the title race.

The Blues went into the London derby six points behind league leaders City, knowing that victory was essential to keep pressure on their rivals.

Instead, they slipped to a rare league defeat, one that could see the gap at the top stretch to nine points by the end of the weekend.

The first half was tense and competitive, with Arsenal creating the clearer chances. Chelsea, however, held firm defensively and reached the interval level, despite struggling to impose themselves in the final third.

Arsenal seize control after the break

The game turned decisively in Arsenal’s favour early in the second half. Beth Mead opened the scoring with a clinical finish, punishing Chelsea for a lapse in concentration.

Seven minutes later, the visitors struck again, with Mead turning provider for Mariona Caldentey, who was afforded too much space inside the box to calmly double the lead.

Chelsea were rocked by the quick double blow and found it difficult to regain control as Arsenal grew in confidence and composure.

Chelsea struggle for response

Manager Sonia Bompastor attempted to change the course of the match by turning to her bench, introducing Keira Walsh, Lauren James and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

Despite the attacking reinforcements, Chelsea failed to generate sustained pressure or carve out clear-cut chances.

Key forward players, including Sam Kerr and Guro Reiten, were largely kept quiet by a disciplined Arsenal defence, leaving the hosts short of ideas as time ticked away.

Arsenal, meanwhile, managed the closing stages effectively, limiting Chelsea to speculative efforts and ensuring the clean sheet was preserved.

The defeat represents one of Chelsea’s few WSL losses in recent seasons and comes at a critical point in the campaign.
