Arturo Vidal’s pre-match comments look extremely stupid after Barcelona were battered 8-2 by Bayern Munich in an unbelievable Champions League quarter final tonight.
Going into the game, Vidal downplayed his former side’s qualities by stressing that on Friday they weren’t playing against a Bundesliga side, “they are playing against the best team in the world”.
And he’s been made to look a complete fool as the side that he deems to be the best in the world were absolutely blown away in Lisbon.
Bayern, who battered Spurs 7-2 in the group stages, were 4-1 up just 31 minutes into the game courtesy of goals from Thomas Muller (2), Ivan Perisic and Serge Gnabry.
And they humiliated the Blaugrana further in the second half as Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and on-loan midfielder Philippe Coutinho (2) got on the scoresheet to inflict Barca’s heaviest European defeat by a long stretch.
It was as if Bayern were livid with what Vidal had to say beforehand and promptly decided to smash his Barca side in response.
The Chilean should know better than to talk too much before a huge game and will no doubt be regretting tempting fate right now.
After the destructive defeat, which will almost definitely result in the dismissal of Barca boss Quique Setien, competition favourites Bayern will take on either Manchester City or Lyon in Wednesday’s semi-final depending on Saturday’s quarter final result.
