Barely 24 hours after Tinubu’s visit, terrorists attack Plateau community, kill man

Fresh violence has erupted in parts of Plateau State, casting doubt on recent assurances of improved security just hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state capital, Jos, to console victims and restore confidence.

In the early hours of Friday, suspected terrorists believed to have come from the Rankum (Mahanga) area invaded the Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area.

The assault claimed the life of 51-year-old Dalyop Betobeje, further unsettling already tense communities.

Renewed violence raises fresh concerns

Community leaders described the attack as a serious setback to ongoing peace efforts, especially coming shortly after the President’s visit aimed at restoring calm.

The latest killing followed another deadly incident in Heipang District. Gunmen suspected to be herders reportedly stormed Ban village on Wednesday night, killing a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, injuring several others, and destroying properties.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association condemned the attack, calling it “a brutal and senseless act” that reflects the persistent insecurity facing communities in the state.

Calls for justice and stronger security response

Security sources confirmed that investigations have begun, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Jacob Pam Chall, chairman of the association in Heipang District, acknowledged the swift response of security personnel but stressed the need for sustained action.

It is imperative that security agencies sustain this momentum and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. Our communities deserve safety and peace,” he said.

The group also urged residents to remain calm, emphasising unity and cooperation with security agencies to strengthen local vigilance.

Tinubu’s assurance under pressure

During his visit earlier in the week, President Tinubu had assured victims and residents of the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the cycle of violence.

“I promise you this experience will not repeat itself,” he said while sympathising with affected families.

However, the renewed attacks in Riyom and Bassa have raised fresh concerns, highlighting the urgent need for more decisive and sustained security interventions.

In recent months, Plateau has witnessed a troubling resurgence of violence, particularly in rural communities, testing the government’s capacity to maintain peace despite high-level interventions.
