According to Kicker, Thomas Müller and Bayern have already begun initial talks on a two-year contract extension.

Both parties are said to be content with this duration, which would run up to 2023 — when Müller will be 33 years old. Moreover, a two-year contract appears to be the most responsible for both parties. 

For the club, they retain both Müller’s services on the pitch and the ability to renew his contract again if Müller can still play at the top level in 2023. For Müller, he gets his (potentially) final bumper contract, another chance to win the Champions League and once again the opportunity to prove his considerable worth.

There are multiple reasons why this renewal should be especially important for Bayern. Firstly, Muller has been in superb form all of this season, and any club would want to retain the services of one of the world’s best midfielders. 

In addition, as Hansi Flick is likely to sign on as full-time manager in Bavaria, Müller’s worth is even more. Under Flick, the Raumdeuteur has displayed his greatest-ever form, becoming a key figure in Bayern’s Flicki Flaka fightback. 

Finally, Müller is an identification figure, cult hero of the club, and key part of the team’s leadership. Losing him would be nothing short of devastating.

A Bayern without Müller in 2020/21 is unimaginable. Let’s hope the Bayern hierarchy quickly gets this deal over the dotted line, in addition to those for David Alaba and Manuel Neuer.
