“Being naked Is not beauty, women must learn to cover up” — First lady, Remi Tinubu says

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has sparked conversation after urging women to embrace modest dressing, stating that being unclad should not be considered beauty.

She made the remarks during an interfaith event held in Abuja, where religious leaders and community members gathered to discuss family values, youth mentorship and societal development.

Call for modest dressing

Speaking at the gathering, the First Lady stressed the need for older women to play stronger mentorship roles in guiding younger girls, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to her, modest dressing reflects cultural values and should be encouraged rather than the growing influence of revealing fashion trends.

She said women should “learn to cover up,” adding that dressing modestly aligns with Nigerian cultural traditions rather than foreign influences.

Message to men and women

While addressing the issue, Tinubu also spoke about personal responsibility in society.

She noted that while women are encouraged to dress modestly, men also have a duty to exercise self-control.

The First Lady referenced a biblical concept, saying God would help men “crucify their eyes,” a phrase interpreted as the need for discipline in controlling one’s gaze.
