Saudi Football Giant Set for Major Ownership Change Amid SPL Transformation.

Al Hilal, one of the most successful clubs in the Saudi Pro League (SPL), is reportedly advancing toward full privatization with a new private owner expected to take majority control, signalling a major shift in the landscape of Saudi football, per sportblits.com

According to reports, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is in advanced talks to acquire a controlling stake in Al Hilal, with negotiations close to being finalized — a move that would mark one of the most significant private ownership deals in Saudi sport.

This development comes as part of a broader privatization push across the Saudi Pro League under the country’s Vision 2030 strategy. Starting in 2023, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) took majority stakes in the country’s top clubs — including Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli — transforming them into corporate entities to attract fresh capital and commercial opportunities.

The expected transfer of ownership for Al Hilal, currently majority-held by the PIF, would make the Riyadh-based side one of the first SPL giants to be fully controlled by private investors, diversifying the league’s ownership structure and potentially accelerating its growth on and off the pitch.

Saudi Arabia’s sports privatization programme is aimed at boosting competitiveness, enhancing governance, and drawing sustained investment into football as part of wider economic diversification goals.
