Burna Boy sets record as first Nigerian artist with five Grammy album nominations

Afro-fusion superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has achieved yet another remarkable feat.

He is the first Nigerian artist to earn five career Grammy nominations in album categories.

His latest album, No Sign of Weakness (2025), has been nominated for Best Global Music Album at the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards.

This new nomination places Burna Boy in a league of his own, marking a significant chapter in his already illustrious career.

His previous Grammy-nominated works include African Giant (2019), Twice As Tall (2020), Love, Damini (2022), and I Told Them (2023), all of which showcased his evolving sound and dominance in global music.

Strong competition in the Global music category

Burna Boy faces a competitive lineup in the Best Global Music Album category this year.

Other nominees include Youssou N’Dour’s Éclairer le monde: Light the World, Siddhant Bhatia’s Sounds of Kumbha, Shakti’s Mind Explosion (50th Anniversary Tour Live), Chapter III: We Return to Light by Anoushka Shankar featuring Alam Khan and Sarathy Korwar, and Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo by Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia.

Despite the stiff competition, many fans believe Burna Boy stands a strong chance, given his consistency and international influence.

His innovative sound and stagecraft have often been praised by the Recording Academy as being at the forefront of global music evolution.

Nigerian artists shine at the 2025 Grammys

In addition to Burna Boy’s album recognition, the singer also bagged another nomination in the Best African Music Performance category for his hit track Love.

He joins other Nigerian heavyweights including Davido, who earned a nod for With You featuring Omah Lay, as well as Ayra Starr and Wizkid, nominated for Gimme Dat.

The category also features Hope & Love by Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin, and Push 2 Start by South African sensation Tyla, showcasing the diversity and depth of African artistry.

These nominations mark yet another proud moment for the continent as Afrobeats continues to dominate global charts, with Nigerian artists leading the charge.

The winners of the 2025 Grammy Awards will be announced next year in Los Angeles.
