The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State Chapter, has said the Hisbah law proposed by the State House of Assembly indicates segregation and discrimination against Christianity.
The association alleged that the law would only create division among the people of different faiths in the state.
The State Chairman of CAN, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, in a statement, warned that the Niger State Hisbah Directorates Bill, sponsored by the member representing Chanchaga Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Abubakar, could create controversies and should not be assented to by the executive arm of government.
Bishop Yohanna further stated that Niger State is not a single religion state, urging the government to look beyond religious divides and focus on unity of citizens.
While calling on members of the State House of Assembly to focus on policies that will benefit the people, CAN chairman said there were already established security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and vigilante groups, with constitutional powers to address social vices.
