Jamie Carragher has warned Man Utd that a mega-money move for Harry Kane might not be in their best interests.
The England captain hinted earlier this week he could be prepared to leave Tottenham if the club do not match his ambitions for trophies.
That has put long-term admirers United on alert who are now being linked with a £150million move for Kane.
But Carragher feels Kane’s penchant for a potential change of scenery has not come at a great time given the coronavirus outbreak, and thinks United may be put off making a bid.
“Kane turns 27 in July,” Carragher said in his Telegraph column. “We have no idea when the next transfer window will open or next season start. If Kane does not leave soon, the situation gets trickier for him.
“When players hit 28, psychologically it makes a big difference to clubs. They see him as nearer 30, recognise there is no resale value and balk at high valuations.
” Manchester United ’s need for a top-class No.9 is urgent and they might see Kane as the ideal fit, but they will apply the same logic if the fee is upwards of £150 million.”
Carragher added that United are still a team undergoing a huge transition and rebuilding process, while Spurs are not necessarily worse off.
That said, Tottenham’s future still looks uncertain, with the club experiencing a stuttering start in the Jose Mourinho era.
With a number of aging stars in their ranks, Spurs are also in need of some serious investment if they are to compete for top honours next season.
Football clubs are yet to feel the full financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic, but there is an increasing likelihood that club’s will swerve big-money transfers in the summer window, which is bad news for Kane’s ambitions.
Moreover, Kane would push the boundaries of United’s clear strategy of chasing younger players they can develop, and his troublesome injury record would no doubt be a concern to Old Trafford chiefs.
Carragher summarised that the forward had “reached the crossroads of his career at the worst time possible”.
He continued: “In other circumstances, the Tottenham striker’s comments suggesting he would consider a move in the near future would be reasonable.
“Spurs fans may not like it, but I can understand why Kane is wondering whether his trophy ambitions will be served elsewhere.”
