Charlton Athletic fans have secured entry to the Valley Stadium as they protest against the EFL’s ownership rules.
Around 500 supporters from ‘Fans4Fans’ group made their way to the stands at the ground, with some even occupying the boardroom and refusing to leave until they owner appears and asks them to vacate the premises.
Pictures and videos from the peaceful protest, said to be ‘stage three’ of the fans’ attempt to get their club back before potential administration and expulsion from the EFL, have widely circulated on social media.
The Addicks fans are venting over the manner in which East Street Investments were able to buy the club from previous owner Roland Duchatelet for just £1 at the start of the year.
At present, American-Danish businessman Thomas Sandgaard is hopeful of outright purchasing the south-east London outfit but his bid is amidst a legal battle as to who is currently the rightful owner.
As per Sky Sports, Paul Elliott, who led the ESI consortium despite being one of three prospective owners to fail the EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, is trying to prevent a potential sale to Sandgaard through a court injunction.
Even with the mess of a situation, Sandgaard remains keen on taking over Charlton. He wrote on Twitter: “Don’t anyone worry. i’m not backing out. I’m all in.”
Charlton are preparing to play in League One next season after suffering relegation from the Championship last term.
