While it’s already forced play to stop across the world, coronavirus is also set to have a considerable impact on football’s finances.
The futures of many of the sport’s biggest names is up in the air, with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar among those whose next steps are uncertain.
In Messi’s case, he again has the option whether to stay at Barcelona beyond this summer or trigger the clause in his contract that allows him to leave.
The Argentine’s contract at the Camp Nou is up at the end of next season and, although it seems as though he’ll renew his deal, recent spats with the club’s board have thrown that into doubt.
Barcelona are going through an internal crisis of their own at the moment, with several members of the club’s board resigning under the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Vice-president Emili Rousaud was one of those to leave the club in recent days and made a parting comment about Messi’s future.
“I can’t confirm [that Messi will renew] 100 percent, although I can’t see Messi at another club because he’s spent his whole life here,” Rousaud said on El Chiringuito.
“He’s at home and he’s grown up here. I can’t understand another possibility.”
Rousaud couldn’t say for sure whether Messi will stay or not mainly because the player hasn’t actually told the club his plans yet.
There were reports about a move to Inter in the last week, but Messi himself has dismissed those as fake news.
As for Ronaldo, there are concerns over whether Juventus will be able to keep paying his massive wages because of the financial implications of coronavirus on the club.
The Portuguese earns 34 million dollars a year in Turin and that would be almost impossible for Juve to maintain after the crisis.
In Italy, there is speculation over a possible move elsewhere for the 35-year-old, but his destinations are limited because of the money he earns.
Real Madrid have ruled out a return for him, with only Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in a position to afford him.
Neymar is another top player whose future is a great unknown.
Barcelona, the club that wanted him and the club he wanted to join, have been significantly weakened financially by the pandemic.
Unless there are big changes in the next few months, it seems as if the Brazilian will stay at PSG for the time being, despite his desire to leave.
However, it all depends on how badly affected PSG are by coronavirus and if they are forced to sell one of their biggest stars to raise funds.
