Ousmane Dembele is the only senior Barcelona player to have not yet been to the club’s training facility.
He underwent his COVID-19 test in his home on Monday, and if he tests negative then he will return to training between Tuesday and Thursday.
He needs to continue to recover from an injury he suffered prior to the suspension of competition, although Barcelona’s intention is to sell the French international.
Dembele, in terms of talent, remains one of the most transferrable players in Los Cules’ squad, which is exceptionally important at a time when they hope to sign either Neymar or Lautaro Martinez, as well as a midfield addition.
With that being said, the sale of Dembele isn’t an easy process as a result of the doubts over both his physical stability and his behavioural problems exhibited during his time with the Blaugrana.
Barcelona value the player at around 60 million euros, but it’s difficult to quite know what the fiscal side of football will look like once the transfer window opens once more.
If he can’t be sold, then Dembele must somehow find a way to fit into a forward line which contains Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann, Ansu Fati, Coutinho and Martin Braithwaite.
Repeated injuries have been the main problem for Dembele, irrespective of his attitude off the pitch, and he missed almost his entire debut season and couldn’t make an impact.
There have since been a number of ailments which have prevented him from building any real consistency, whilst the Catalan giants have grown exhausted with his childish actions in his personal life.
It didn’t go unnoticed that the only player who didn’t connect to the video conference that Quique Setien arranged for the squad on April 14 was Dembele, and that was merely the latest in a list of incidents of this type.
What is making life difficult for Barcelona is that these concerns aren’t a secret, everything has been played out in the public eye and potential buying clubs are wondering whether they will be able to trust Dembele in a way that Los Cules just can’t.
Dembele is a fast, agile player who dribbles past defenders with consummate ease, yet he will not play again this season and won’t be able to demonstrate if he is over his injury problem before the transfer window opens.
Barcelona remain hopeful that they can still close a sale for 60 million euros, although if he recovers from injury well, he could be given one more season to perhaps shine in Spain.
