AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could have joined Manchester United or Ajax on a free transfer, according to a report.

During Adriano Galliani’s long interview with Telelombardia on Wednesday night, the former Milan CEO spoke about Donnarumma and his agent Mino Raiola.

“I have always worked well with Raiola. He has taken very rich commissions, but with me he has always behaved correctly,” he said (via MilanNews).

A shock revelation then came from the current Monza chief as he revealed: “Raiola had the chance to take Gigio away from Milan to zero Lire twice.”

According to what MilanNews report further down in the article, Ajax and – above all – Manchester United were the two teams that the young goalkeeper could have signed for on a free transfer if Raiola had his way.

This situation happened before his senior debut back in October 2015, when he was chosen to start aged just 16 years old and helped the Rossoneri secure a 2–1 victory after three matches without a win.

Milan are facing another dilemma regarding Donnarumma’s future as his contract expires in June 2021, so the Rossoneri have to either find a way to agree a renewal before the start of next season (whenever that may be) or sell him in the upcoming window so the 21-year-old doesn’t leave for free.

Interestingly, Manchester United are one of the teams that have been linked, though now it is reported he would cost around €50m.
