Talking about the worst transfers of the Premier League in recent years, among the first is Donny van de Beek. It seemed that the signing of the young midfielder was a long-term investment for Manchester United, but in reality everything turned out differently. So, we should note that Manchester United signed van de Beek from Ajax for 40 million euros in 2020. The sum was rather big, but it looked quite reasonable, because the footballer was young and has proven himself in the Amsterdam club.

1. Van de Beek was unable to fully adapt to the Premier League speeds and other circumstances.  Because of this, he repeatedly missed the pace of games and, as a result, didn’t benefit his team.
2. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer simply didn’t find a place for the Dutchman on the field. In the scheme of the Norwegian, the places in the midfield are limited. Plus, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes played consistently in the starting XI. It turns out that van de Beek had to face serious competition, which he could not stand.
3. Midfielder’s injuries. At some point, it seemed that Donny could become a starter player, but due to numerous injuries, this didn’t happen.

As a result, today the signing of such a player didn’t affect football scores of Manchester United matches. Of course, this is clearly not what the bosses of the club and the coaching staff were counting on.

In his first season at Old Trafford, this player of the Netherlands national team received playing time at least occasionally, but in the second season even getting on the bench was a happiness for him. All this allows us to speak of this transfer as an outright failure.

What to expect from the midfielder in the future?

The potential of this player is well known to fans, experts and the team’s coaching staff. However, even despite the complex schedule of EPL fixtures, there is no place for him in the starting line-up. During the first season in Manchester United, several clubs asked to sign van de Beek on loan.

They got snubbed, but now there is a chance that the Red Devils will be more cooperative. A player of this age needs constant practice. If he doesn’t get it, his value will drop significantly. Therefore, MU itself should be interested in the development of the football player. In the meantime, his transfer looks like one of the worst ones for the team in recent years.
