The governors, in separate messages, underscored the need for Nigeria to be peaceful and for Nigerians to be united, urging them to learn from the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
In his message, the Ekiti governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, urged Christians in the State to use the period to pray for the peaceful conduct of the gubernatorial election set to hold in the state, as well as offer intercession for peace, development and prosperity.
The governor, in his Easter message signed by his chief press secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode, noted that the Easter season was a period of sober reflection, which lessons should be imbibed and reflected on at all times.
He said such fundamental values would go a long way in promoting and strengthening the foundation of love, peace, harmony and progress in the country, adding that the season should serve as a reminder to the selflessness, love, sacrifice and tolerance of Jesus Christ throughout his earthly sojourn, death and resurrection.
The Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in his message, urged Nigerians to use the occasion to rethink their humanity.
He stated that the essence of humanity was the love of God, as well as the love of neighbours as exemplified by the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
The governor regretted that some politicians had allowed the quest for power and wealth to rob them of their humanity. He urged such people to have a rethink.
“I am using the period of Easter, which symbolises peace, brotherliness, forgiveness, love and sacrifice, to appeal to everyone to embrace peace for the sake of our children, in accordance with the teaching of Christ,” he stated.
The Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, also said that peace remained the needed elixir for development to take place in the country, noting that an atmosphere of peace and cooperation between the government and the governed was the needed ingredient for any development or progress in any nation.
The governor, in a goodwill message signed by his spokesman, Nathaniel Ikyur, said all religions preached peace and good neighbourliness, and wondered why “some fanatics, in the name of religion, resort to violence or take laws into their hands to address certain situations that could be easily resolved without resorting to violence.”
