Emmanuel Adebayor makes Togo U-turn, returns as captain

Crystal Palace striker Emmanuel Adebayor has returned to the Togolese national team after a long absence and will lead his team’s qualification charge ahead of next year’s AFCON tournament.

The former Arsenal striker, who turned down his initial call-up to the national side, reconsidered his decision at the request of the countries football officials and will now lead his team against Tunisia in today’s AFCON qualifiers.

The forward last played for Togo in June 2015 and turned down an approach from FTF president Colonel Kossi Akpovy earlier this month to focus on his club future at Crystal Palace.

Adebayor, who played for Togo at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, has since made himself unavailable for selection on several occasions and criticised the “chaos” in the FTF.

Togo is in the same group with Djibouti, Tunisia and Liberia and have managed two wins in the AFCON qualification campaign.
