I don’t want to jinx this or anything but, England’s new generation of talent are a little bit special, aren’t they?
Don’t get me wrong, it is difficult to imagine The Three Lions reaching a final of a major competition after years of having high expectations only to be let down time and time again.
But it does look like Gareth Southgate’s side will have a genuine chance given the current crop of players coming through.
From the likes of Mason Greenwood, who has has already scored 16 goals in 42 appearances for Manchester United this season, including a stunning brace against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, to the Stockport Iniestahimself, Phil Foden, who continues to push for a first-team place in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
The strength in depth available to Southgate, even at this very moment in time, will give any international team a run for its money.
England have often struggled to build a solid structure in recent years, especially in defensive areas.
With the ever-improving Dean Henderson in-between the sticks, a Cumbrian lad who is knocking at the door for a first team place at Old Trafford after impressing at Sheffield United, a back-four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell provides both an attacking threat from full-back positions and solid cover at centre-back.
And for me, the competition at right-back just sums up how strong this team actually is.
Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka is just behind Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order but then you have the experienced Kyle Walker pushing for a first-team place, as well as Chelsea’s supremely talented full-back Reece James, who has made 29 appearances for Frank Lampard’s side this season.
The midfield three of Henderson, Foden and Oxlade-Chamberlain speaks for itself but again, the strength in depth and ultimately, competition for places is stronger than ever, with the likes of Mason Mount, James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Dele Alli and Declan Rice all pushing for a first-team place.
And finally the front line of Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane. A perfect mixure of goals, assists and link-up play.
Again, the competition for places up top will give Gareth Southgate a selection headache come game day, as Arsenal’s young winger Bukayo Saka continues to impress under Mikel Arteta, while Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Tammy Abraham, Danny Ings and so many others make their mark in club football.
It really is an exciting time to be an England supporter.
