“Even without knowing me, he stood by my side” – NYSC Asthma survivor shares love story

A Nigerian lady has shared a heartwarming story about how a life-threatening asthma attack during her NYSC year unexpectedly led to a lifelong bond.

The story was shared on Facebook by Buchi & Buchiress, sparking admiration and emotional reactions online.

According to her post, 14 years ago, she and her now-husband were youth corps members traveling from Onitsha to Gombe on Uchenna Motors.

They had never spoken to each other until a night at the NYSC camp changed everything.

After washing her clothes and going to bed, the northern cold triggered her first asthma attack.

By morning, she could barely breathe, and the camp quickly organized an emergency transfer to FMC Gombe. She needed a doctor, a nurse, and a pharmacist for the ambulance.

One of the corps members called her husband, who rushed to the ambulance immediately. He reportedly had no prior knowledge of the situation but understood that an emergency required his urgent attention.

At the hospital, her husband stood silently by her side, offering comfort in her vulnerable state. She recalled:

“…When I woke up, as my eyes fluttered open, my husband was standing by the foot side of my bed. He held my feet, squeezed them for a while, and asked me… ‘Can you breathe well now?’ I gently nodded in affirmation. He kept on squeezing my feet without saying another word. In my most vulnerable moment, even without knowing who I was, he stood there looking out for me, silently giving me warmth and comfort.”

By evening, she reportedly felt better and was discharged from FMC Gombe.

The couple returned to their NYSC camp, where their bond grew from friendship to love, eventually leading to marriage and three children.

“…That asthma survivor GOD keeps helping. From friends to lovers and to couples… happily married with three beautiful children. That asthma survivor GOD keeps helping,” she added.
