Premier League managers has been ranked on their 2019/20 performance, with Jurgen Klopp awarded ‘Manager of the Year’ while bosses at Arsenal and Everton are labelled ‘Total Failures’.
The TierMaker ranking, put together by SPORTbible, rates every manager on this season and Klopp is easily on top after delivering the title for Liverpool with a record seven games still to play.
At the other end, Unai Emery and Marco Silva are rated this season’s worst managers. Silva somehow had Everton in the relegation zone in December, while Emery’s Arsenal went from bad to farce and Mr Good Evening became Mr Goodbye after a seven-game winless run.
The only man to really challenge Klopp for MotY honours is Chris Wilder, who gruffly took newly promoted Sheffield United to an incredible ninth and sits in the secondary tier of ‘Superb’.
Joining him are Pep Guardiola and, surprisingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Man City’s season has been disappointing but Pep’s side still scored 102 goals, kept 17 clean sheets and finished 15 points clear in second. So hardly a disaster.
Nobody would’ve put Solskjaer here after January’s home defeat to Burnley. But a 14-game unbeaten league streak and some stylish attacking football have taken Man United to third place. Realistically, as high a finish as Ole could have delivered.
Overachievers include Brendan Rodgers (despite Leicester’s agonising late dip), Ralph Hasenhuttl (what a turnaround after Southampton’s 9-0 hammering), Burnley’s Sean Dyche and even Nigel Pearson: responsible for seven of Watford’s eight wins yet somehow sacked. Weird.
Frank Lampard can maybe feel aggrieved to only be labelled ‘Solid’ after achieving his main league aim of Champions League qualification, but defensive issues hurt his inconsistent Chelsea side. Mikel Arteta and, yes, Jose Mourinho are here too after eventually steadying failing teams.
It genuinely hurts us to call Mauricio Pochettino an ‘Underachiever’ given how far he overachievedduring his Tottenham career. But his Spurs side really were bad this season. Same goes for Eddie Howe who’s done everything for Bournemouth, but finishing below West Ham and Aston Villa in 2019/20 is simply not very good.
King Carlo Ancelotti undoubtedly solved some problems at Everton – but it’s not exactly been awe-inspiring, especially as expectations for an all-time great manager are so high. Next season will be the real test.
Daniel Farke, meanwhile, isn’t solely to blame for Norwich’s woes as he did well to get them into the Premier League. But come on. What else are you supposed to call 21 points from 38 games and finishing the season on 10 straight losses apart from ‘Awful’?
