Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), along with his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe and son Abubakar Abdulaziz, touched down in Kebbi on Thursday night after meeting their ₦1.5 billion bail conditions set by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Federal High Court granted the trio bail on Wednesday, ordering that each release bond be set at ₦500 million with two sureties each who must own verified landed property in highbrow areas of the Federal Capital Territory.
The sureties are also required to swear affidavits of means and provide other documentation as part of bail compliance. The court further directed that their international passports be deposited with the registry and prohibited them from travelling abroad without permission.
Malami and his family are facing trial on charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including alleged money laundering and related offences. The 16-count charge involves an alleged ₦8.7 billion bribery and illicit funds scheme dating back several years, which they have denied.
Following their arrival in Kebbi, they were received by cheering family members and well-wishers.
Malami served as Justice Minister from November 11, 2015, to May 29, 2023, under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
