Ex-Oyo governor, Olunloyo dies @ 89

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State and a respected mathematician and technocrat, has died just days before his 90th birthday.

His death was announced in a statement issued by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family on Sunday.

The statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home”, described him as a revered figure whose legacy spans decades of service to Nigeria and humanity.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat,” the family said.

Dr. Olunloyo held several distinguished titles, including the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife.

He was also the pioneer Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and Kwara State Polytechnic.

The family stated that his long-standing contributions to the nation would remain a source of pride, even as they come to terms with the loss.

Plans are underway to give him a befitting burial, and the public has been urged to respect the family’s privacy during this period of mourning.

In April 2024, false reports of Dr. Olunloyo’s death surfaced online, which he personally refuted in an interview from his residence in Ibadan.

“I’m still here, not yet gone,” he had said, expressing concern over the trend of unfounded death rumours.

Reflecting on his life at the time, Olunloyo noted, “My father died at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I’m 89. I’ve crossed the expected life age.”

He also cited a previous episode in 2022 when similar false reports claimed he had passed away at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
