Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Mrs. Titilayo Ajanaku, is dead.
Ajanaku, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 73.
Our Correspondent learnt that the politician reportedly died after a battle with a terminal illness that had lasted for years.
Until her death, the late Ajanaku was the Otun Iyalode of Egbaland.
She was the chairman of old Abeokuta Local Government in Ogun State and, indeed, the first woman to be elected as a local government chairman in Nigeria.
Ajanaku, who was born on January 25, 1946 at Ago-Odo Quarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was a trained nurse, administrator and women leader.
She was also one of the top politicians arrested in 1995 over a phantom coup and later arraigned before the Patrick Aziza-led military panel.
In 2015, Ajanaku dumped the PDP and joined the Peoples Democratic Movement (a support group of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar) ahead of that year’s election.
She attended the Nawair-Ud-Deen Secondary School, Abeokuta; and trained in Nursing at Stobhill General Hospital, Nether-Edge City General Hospital, Sheffield, United Kingdom, between 1964 and 1965.
