The Federal Government has predicted five days of heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), beginning on Monday (today) and ending on October 18, 2024.
The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment made the forecast in a statement on Monday.
The government agency advised communities on the flood plains of Rivers Donga, Benue, and Ogun to evacuate due to rising water levels.
According to the centre, the identified locations and their surroundings are likely to experience rainfall that could result in flooding. The affected states include Osun, Delta, Cross River, Anambra, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Gombe, Katsina, Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Yobe, Adamawa, Kogi, Kwara, Bauchi, Plateau, and Zamfara, as well as the FCT.
In Osun State, areas such as Ede, Ile-Ife, Ilesa, and Osogbo are expected to be affected. In Delta State, Escravos is listed as a high-risk area. Cross River State’s Ikom is also expected to experience flooding.
Taraba State’s Donga, Ibi, Wukari, Bandawa, Beli, Bolleri, Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gungun Bodel, Kambari, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Ngaruwa, Serti, and Yorro are all at risk.
Other affected areas include Nasarawa State’s Rukubi, Kebbi State’s Argungu, Birnin-Kebbi, Gwandu, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, and Yelwa. Gombe State’s Bajoga, Katsina State’s Bakori and Funtua, and Borno State’s Biu and Briyel are also expected to experience flooding.
Kaduna State’s Birnin-Gwari, Buruku, Kaduna, and Jaji, Niger State’s Bida, Kontagora, Lapai, Lavun, Magama, Mashegu, Mokwa, New Bussa, Rijau, Sarkin Pawa, Suleja, and Wushishi, and Yobe State’s Dapchi are all listed as high-risk areas.
Adamawa State’s Demsa, Farkumo, Ganye, Gbajili, Jimeta, Mayo-Belwa, Mubi, Natubi, Numan, Song, Shelleng, and Wuro Bokki are expected to experience flooding. Kogi State’s Ibaji and Omala, Kwara State’s Jebba and Kosubosu, and Bauchi State’s Kari, Tafawa Balewa, and Kirfi are also at risk.
Plateau State’s Shendam, the FCT’s Kubwa, Gwagwalada, and Bwari, Kano State’s Sumaila, Oyo State’s Kishi, Sokoto State’s Silame, and Zamfara State’s Majara are all expected to experience flooding.
