Sports insurers have become inundated with enquiries from the world of football, with clubs desperately trying to discover if they are covered for losses due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Premier League and EFL’s decision to suspend the season until April means dozens of sides are set to lose vital revenue from this period of inactivity.

That particularly applies to those lower down the pyramid.

Luton Town chief executive Gary Sweet, speaking on talkSPORT, called on the Premier League to use its £1.5billion cash reserves to help those clubs in trouble.

One leading insurer, who works closely with players and teams in the Premier League, said it is unclear whether clubs will be able to recover their losses.

Matt Seldon, the head of sport at insurance brokers BBi Berns Brett, told Sportsmail: ‘Football clubs and other sporting organisations will suffer financially.

‘Many look to the insurance industry for help and it is frustrating that often covers are unclear and open to the interpretation of individual insurers. This is especially relevant when considering how the pandemic can affect the income of a business, travel insurance and event cancellation cover.

‘In their defence insurers will point out that they cannot provide realistic covers to society unless the risks are foreseeable and understood and included in their premium calculations.

‘BBi are getting many enquiries daily from clients in the sports and non-sports business around how their insurance is affected, and how it will respond to losses from this virus.
