Former Liverpool and Cameroon defender Joël Matip has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.
As confirmed by the Reds, Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 on a free transfer from Schalke 04 and spent eight successful years at Anfield, playing under manager Jürgen Klopp.
During his time with the Reds, Matip helped secure major trophies, including the 2019 UEFA Champions League, the 2020 Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups.
His final appearance came against Sheffield United last year, where he suffered a serious ACL injury that sidelined him.
Matip officially said his goodbyes to Liverpool fans at Anfield on the final day of last season, before his contract expired.
In addition to his club career, Matip earned 27 caps for Cameroon and represented the national team in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
His retirement marks the end of a distinguished playing career at both club and international levels.
