Former John Obi Mikel’s Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor handed European ban for one season by UEFA after Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches.

The Black Sea Storm who is currently leaders in the league had failed to meet an agreement reached in 2016 when the club was found to have breached the rules.

UEFA confirmed their decision and stated that the club will not be allowed to play either in the Champions League or the Europa League irrespective of their final standing in the table.

The FFP rules were introduced in 2011, designed to stop teams spending more money than they generate themselves.

AC Milan and Manchester City have both been barred from European football for breaking the rules, although Premier League Champions have launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which will begin next week.

The season in Turkey will restart on June 12 with Trabzonspor are level at the top alongside Istanbul Basaksehir, with eight matches remaining.

Mikel who left the club in acrimonious circumstances due to continued league action in the country despite the Coronavirus pandemic has Super Eagles striker Anthony Nwakaeme in their ranks who has notched up 10 goals in 24 league matches this term so far.
