
Former Washington standout Tre’ Johnson has died at the age of 54, reportedly passing away suddenly during a family trip on Sunday , February 15.
Johnson, who made his mark as a star player in Washington before moving on to a professional career, was said to have died “suddenly and unexpectedly,” according to statements from those close to the family.
He played for Washington through 2000, spent 2001 with Cleveland and returned to Washington for a final year in 2002. Irene said the athlete was known for his “durability and strength” during his career at Washington.
The 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard was a Pro Bowl selection in 1999.

After retiring from football, he taught history at the Landon School in Bethesda – a private school located outside Washington DC. Johnson had been forced to take a leave of absence, his wife said.
Tributes have begun pouring in from former teammates, fans, and members of the football community, many remembering him not only for his impact on the field but also for his character off it.

Details surrounding his death have not been fully disclosed, but the unexpected nature of his passing has left many in shock.
Johnson is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
