Ahmed Musa must leave Leicester City if he wants the chance of regular first-team football.

That is the view of former Wolves defender Isaac Okoronkwo who has 26 caps for the Nigeria national side.

Okoronkwo, who ended his career in Russia – the country where Musa made his name before a £16m move to Leicester from CSKA Moscow in July 2016, said he has tried to convince Musa to move back east and put himself in with a chance of regular football before the World Cup this summer.

“I talked with Ahmed Musa and I tried to convince him that returning to Russia would be the right step,” Okoronkwo told Nigerian news outlet Vanguard.

“Take John Obi Mikel for example. He correctly did that, he left Chelsea for China. It’s better to play there than to sit on the bench.

“At Leicester, he sits on the bench. Before the World Cup, he needs a team that he knows well, and after the tournament you will be able to think about other options.

“Especially CSKA Moscow, they need a central striker now.”

Musa has not started a game in the Premier League all season and his appearance on the bench at Liverpool over the festive period was the first time he had appeared in the match-day squad all season.

He might have hoped for more of an opportunity when Craig Shakespeare was sacked but it looks like new boss Claude Puel is set to give the Nigerian limited game time too.

Speaking last month on Musa’s position at Leicester, Puel said it was not the time to discuss his future.

“For me he is a good player with quality. He is not a striker, he is a winger left or right. He can take space with good penetration. In training, he always gives a positive attitude and works hard.”

“We have a lot of players in the same position and sometimes it is tough and difficult for them and the staff to make a choice and give them more game time, like Musa.”
