From Kane To Gary Neville – What Has Been Said About Liverpool And EPL Title

With a 25-point buffer at the top of the table, Liverpool are just two wins away from winning their first league title in 30 years.

However, with the professional game currently on hold because of the coronavirus outbreak, the fate of the 2019/20 Premier League season is still uncertain.

There are also reports of a “World Cup-style” event being considered so as to conclude the top-flight season as soon as possible if and when football resumes.

It seems the Premier League are still committed to an indefinite extension of the campaign, with FIFA seemingly on the same page.

Some big names from the world of sport – and some from outside it – have been having their say on what the Premier League and FA should do to resolve the situation once and for all.

This is what they have been saying…

UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin

“I can’t see a way Liverpool could be left without a title.

“If the Premier League resumes play, Liverpool will almost certainly win the title. Theoretically it’s not all over, but practically Liverpool are on the verge of it.

“If by any chance the play will not resume, we still have to find a way to declare final results, to declare champions.

“And again I cannot see, I cannot imagine a scenario, in which the champions would not be Liverpool.

“I understand the fans will be disappointed if it happens in an empty stadium or even in the league offices, but I believe, they will get the title one way or another.”

Alan Shearer

“Football does not seem important right now, but at the same time we are all looking forward to the day it resumes again. It will be a sign that life is getting back to normal.

“When it does, I hope we can get this season finished. The Premier League has said that it is going to explore every possible angle to try to complete the campaign and will only look at other options as a last resort, which at this stage is the right thing to do.

“I think everyone is trying to be as committed as possible to getting the season finished at some stage, whether that is in June, July or August. I hope that will happen, even if affects the start of next season.

“We have to wait until it is safe, though. And no-one has any choice but to sit tight and wait, because we are all just guessing when that might be.”

Harry Kane

“It’s a hard one. I know the Premier League will do everything they can to finish the season.

“My personal opinion, I think we need to try and finish the season, but there needs to be a point where we say enough’s enough and we need to finish it… going into July/August.

“There needs to be a limit. The limit for me is the end of June. Then we have to look at the options and look ahead to next season.”

Roy Hodgson

“Everybody is surely missing the game enormously, and like us, I’m sure they will be hopeful that every effort is being placed on bringing it back as soon as possible, once it’s safe to do so.

“Everyone is in total agreement we need an end to this season. We don’t want artificial means of deciding who wins the league, who gets into the Champions League, who gets relegated and promoted.

“Ideally our players would have three or four weeks’ minimum to prepare for the first match back, but I accept there may have to be a squeeze on that timeframe.”

Gary Lineker

“I think ideally we’d like to finish the season, I think that would make sense.

“But this whole situation is so fluid, and much more important than anything, it’s difficult to know when it’s going to go away.

“We could be able to play again by June, it might have calmed down enough. That might have to be behind closed doors, which is not really what football’s about, but it would help to finish the leagues.

“That’s the thing everybody would want to happen, except perhaps some supporters who really don’t like Liverpool.

“I think that would be the fairest thing. Legally, it would be easier right across the board if they could finish the league, but whether it’s possible or not, I don’t know.

“When do they start again, in June, July, August?

“The one thing I’ll say at the moment is the players are having their rest now and it’s not the rest they would want, it’s not the holiday they would want, but once they get back and have a couple of weeks training to start the season again, they certainly wouldn’t need another pre-season between the seasons.”

Karren Brady

“There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play, the games can’t go ahead.

“The Premier League hopes that an interlude of three weeks from now will enable it to restart, but that may well be dreamland. Perhaps scrubbing Euro 2020 could provide more time to complete the season into the summer, but that is also a giant ‘if’. What if the league cannot be finished?

“As games in both the Premier League and the EFL are affected, the only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void. Who knows who would have gone down or come up if the games have not actually been played in full?”

Brady, the vice-chairman of struggling West Ham, later retracted many of these comments after being accused of self-interest.

Danny Murphy

Talking about the touted PL “mega-event”

“I think in principle, it is a fantastic idea. I think it is doable.

“Look, there are legs in it and I think even if it doesn’t happen they are trying to think outside the box here.

“We have talked about this before and there is no ideal way of resolving this season. The reason it is not going to be ideal is because we are so used to what we get; the full stadiums.

“The fairness of that I understand. But because of this coronavirus and these unprecedented times we are in, we have to find a way.”

Gary Neville and Piers Morgan

These two took to Twitter for a heated debate over what the Premier League should do.

GN: “Finish this season in a short time frame when safe. Condense next season if needed. Open transfer window from May and run it all the way through 20/21 to give clubs agility. Extend players contract to complete 19/20. Offer financial packages for clubs in need, inc non-league.”

PM: “None of this will work in reality. Nobody wants to see endless 3-times-a-week games behind closed doors at obvious risk of injury to players. Only solution is to void this season & start again when we can. A shame for Liverpool, Leeds etc, but that’s irrelevant given the crisis.”

GN: “Piers, it will work and is likely to happen when, and only when, it is safe to do so.”

PM: “Huge respect for you, Gary (especially with what you’re doing for NHS staff at your hotels), but it won’t… and there’s no way too much energy should be expended on trying to ‘save the football season’ when all efforts should be diverted to saving lives. Football’s irrelevant.”

GN: “No-one is expending energy on saving a football season. Staying home, staying safe, helping the vulnerable and NHS is the priority. However, planning (including football) beyond CV is vital also for 99% of the population that require income and employment in the future.”

PM: “Yes, I get that… but you seem to think this will all be over in a couple of months. It won’t.”

GN: “No, I don’t. But whenever it is over there has to be a plan that is well thought out.”

Jose Holebas

“In my opinion you have to cancel the season, for me that is pretty clear.

“I would give Liverpool the title, they deserve it and have played incredible football this season.

“They are clearly the number one team. I think it makes no sense to keep rescheduling all the time.”

Chris Sutton

“To cancel this Premier League campaign right now, declare Liverpool as champions and relegate Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich, would open up a can of worms.

“Why? Namely because of Villa, their game in hand and the money involved in all of this. Win that extra match and Dean Smith’s side would be 16th.

“They’d be safe. So to say you’re going down because you’re second-bottom as things stand would be utterly unfair as far as they’re concerned.

“They’d fight tooth and nail for the tens of millions that Premier League status brings with it.

“What about the Champions League places, too? Sheffield United have a game in hand which, if won, would take them to fifth.

“And because of Manchester City’s European ban, fifth means fourth, which means Champions League qualification. They wouldn’t take the decision to end the season now lightly either.”

Rio Ferdinand

“I think the Premier League should be void.

“I know there’s going to be a lot of Liverpool fans going, ‘oh, Rio, it’s just because you used to play for Man United’.

“I just don’t see a way that can be done where health isn’t compromised. Simple as that. All this behind closed doors business – you’re still going to have players there. Are the players not part of society?

“There are players who are going down with the illness who might not have recovered, or catch it from someone and then spread it to other players. It won’t be fair, it’s not a level playing field. I just don’t feel it’s right.”
