The Deir al-Balah municipality reports that key desalination facilities have completely shut down due to Israel’s power cutoff, raising fears of worsening humanitarian conditions.
After the cessation of humanitarian aid, Arab reports claim today (Monday) that Israel has begun to partially cut off the water supply from the Gaza Strip. The disconnection is carried out by cutting off the electricity to desalination plants in the Gaza Strip.
The mayor of Deir al-Balah confirmed in an interview with Al-Jazeera that the two main desalination plants have stopped operating due to the disconnection of electricity from Israel.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, the director general of planning, water and sanitation in the Gaza Municipality, Maher Ashur Salem, said that the amount of water currently available in the Gaza Strip does not exceed 25% of the natural amounts, and that more than 70% of it has been lost as a result of the destruction of supply lines, following Israel’s decision to cut off aid and threaten to cut off the water.
Salem added that the situation could become more dangerous if Israel cuts off Mekorot’s water, which he claims supplies about 80 percent of the water currently available in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Al-Aqsa TV reported that 31 sick and wounded people in the Gaza Strip were on their way to the Rafah crossing in order to leave the Gaza Strip for treatment abroad.
