Germany’s Mario Gomez To Miss Rest Of Euro 2016
Germany striker Mario Gomez will play no further part in Euro 2016 after suffering a hamstring injury in his country’s quarterfinal win on Saturday.
Gomez was substituted in the 72nd minute of the penalty shootout victory over Italy.
Scans showed that the 30-year-old striker had suffered a hamstring tear that would rule him out for the rest of the tournament.
Coach Joachim Low told the official German FA (DFB) website: “It is a bitter blow when, at the crucial stage of the tournament, a player is ruled out.
“I feel very sorry for Mario, who has put in strong performances.
“But we have to find solutions, and the quality of the squad is high. I have full confidence in all the players.”
Midfielders Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger were also sent for scans after picking up problems against Italy, but neither has been ruled out of the semifinal against either France or Iceland.
Khedira exited after 16 minutes with a muscular injury following a collision with Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, while Schweinsteiger took a knock to the knee after coming on as a substitute.
A DFB statement said Khedira had suffered a thigh injury and that his recovery, along with that of Schweinsteiger, would be monitored on a day-to-day basis.
Schweinsteiger has been diagnosed with a ligament strain in his right knee.
Meanwhile, defender Mats Hummels is banned for the semi-final after his booking against the Italians.
