GOV. WILLIE OBIANO IN OGBARU, FLAGS OFF STATEWIDE FLUSHING AND FUMIGATION AGAINST INSECTS AND RODENTS CODE-NAMED: “OPERATION WIPE OUT MOSQUITOS”
By Arinzechukwu Awogu /March/16/2016.
Insects (including mosquitoes) and rodents give no prior notice before moving into apartments, they strut around like royalty and even default on rent payment. Smoke out domicile gangs of insect, rodents and other unwanted guests from your homes today, this was the charge by His Excellency, the governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano to the people of Anambra state this afternoon as he flagged off the 2016 statewide fumigation exercise tagged; “Operation Wipe Out” at Elephant House, Obodoukwu road, New Heaven Okpoko in Ogbaru council area of the state.
The governor who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Environment, Rt. Hon. Chinwe Nwebili and her Health counterpart, Dr. Joe Akabuike, emphasised on the need for regular home fumigation and pest control in the state which he noted will keep the risk of catching malaria, Lassa and the dreaded zikka virus among other pest induced sicknesses far away from the state.
Governor Obiano called on the people of the state to corporate with those carrying out the fumigation exercise since it was for their own good. The governor who had pro-actively at the out break of zikka virus disease constituted a special team that would spray some selected parts of Anambra State as a way to flush out rodents and mosquitoes that are known to be the carriers of both the Lassa and Zikka viruses, was confident that the “operation wipe out” would further ensure that the viruses responsible for Lassa fever and the spread of the zikka virus was kept in permanent check in Anambra state.
The choice of Ogbaru for the flag off may not be unconnected with the yearly flood that affects the area every rainy season and with the rains set to begin, which might present unimaginable health implications to the residents of flood prone areas in the state, makes the call for public and timely preventive intervention an imperative, as prevention they say, is better than cure. Meteorologists had warned that there might be flooding in some parts of the country.
TOPOGRAPHY OF OGBARU (OGBAHU) IN BRIEF:
It is an area defined by water. Its name, Ogbahu, was derived from the choreography (movement) of the waters of the River Niger and its tributaries. It is an agrarian community with tall luxuriant grasses and alluvial farm land that presupposes bumper yearly harvest. The terrain of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra state is originally marshy and water logged during the rainy season. Stagnant water left behind by the receding flood is no doubt possible breeding ground for malaria vectors and other disease organisms. It is therefore in timely cognizance of the fore going facts and more that this operation wipe out rodents, mosquitoes and other insects by Governor Willie Obiano is most laudable and when residents of the area in particular and Anambra state in general embrace the Governor Willie Obiano’s model of prevention and embark on aggressive flushing and fumigation as a further measure towards saving lives, then sizeable members of our society will be saved from deaths associated with malaria, cholera and other debilitating illnesses that stare the people of the state in the face.
The governor later commissioned 20 of the fumigation tricycles laden tanks for Anambra North Senatorial zone and said that the rest 40 tricycles are for Anambra South and Central Senatorial zones.
