“He bought it out of shame” – Lady narrates eatery experience that sparked online reactions

A Nigerian lady has sparked online reactions after sharing an incident she witnessed at an eatery, where shame and ego allegedly forced a young man to overspend.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she revealed that she had gone to buy food when she noticed a young man and a lady arrive before her.

She said the server first attended to the lady, who confidently ordered Chinese rice and fried rice, one portion each. The lady also added plantain and salad.

When it was time to choose protein, the server listed the prices. Beef cost ₦1,500, chicken ₦1,900, another chicken option ₦3,500, and turkey ₦5,000.

Without hesitation, the lady chose the ₦5,000 turkey and added a large pack of Hollandia yoghurt.

The narrator said she closely watched the young man and noticed his discomfort. From his body language, she could tell the bill had exceeded what he planned to spend.

She added that the young man looked stressed and uneasy. Despite this, he did not question the order or suggest cheaper options. He remained silent while the food was packed.

After collecting the food, the lady thanked him and asked if he wanted to order anything for himself. He quickly replied that he was not hungry and still had food at home.

The narrator ended her story by advising people not to allow shame or ego push them into unnecessary spending.

“Don’t use shyness or shame to spend money you didn’t plan to spend,” she warned.

The story has since sparked reactions online. One commentator wrote, “Poor guy, he even said he’s not hungry.”

Another added, “This is why I always calculate my money before going on dates. Shame no dey pay bills.”
