The member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has said traditional rulers will be given specific roles in the ongoing 1999 constitutional reform.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 26, at the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration in Daura, Katsina State, Doguwa explained that a request to that effect is already before the constitutional reform committee.
“Considering the crucial role of traditional rulers in the country, as member of the House of Representatives we are already considering that provision,” Doguwa said. “Traditional rulers even before colonial rulers have been very crucial in ensuring peace, security and local administration. So, we need to provide them with their right position in the constitution.”
Doguwa, who also holds the title of Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, commended the organisers of the event, saying it would further unite Hausa speakers across the world.
The 2025 International Hausa Day is being hosted at the palace of the Emir of Daura. First marked on social media in 2015, the annual celebration has since grown into a global event held every August 26, though it is yet to be officially recognised by the United Nations.
Daura, the hometown of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, was chosen for this year’s celebration because of its historical importance as the cradle of Hausa people and language and the mother of the modern Hausa states.
