Where does the ex-Super Eagles frontman rank among the most fearsome Nigerian attackers in the Premier League?
Currently, Ighalo sits 10th in the overall Nigerian ranking of Premier League scorers.
He has 16 top flight goals to date – across spells with Watford and now Manchester United – but having signed a new deal with the Red Devils, he now has the opportunity to add to his Old Trafford tally.
Has scored 19 goals across his time with both Manchester City and Leicester City, although has struggled to maintain his early momentum at the Etihad Stadium since joining the Foxes.
Like Ighalo, he has the opportunity to add to his haul during the remaining weeks of the season.
One of only two players on this list to have won the Premier League title, Moses has netted 20 times in the top flight.
The Internazionale loanee has represented the likes of Wigan Athletic, Liverpool and West Ham United in the Premier League, but he’s enjoyed the most succes for Chelsea, with whom he was a league winner under Antonio Conte.
Had it not been for injury, Big Vic would surely have netted more than his 26 goals across his long career in the Prem.
He featured for West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland after making his name with Everton, but never truly realised his potential during a four-year international career with the Super Eagles.
In 2006, following the retirement of the legendary Alan Shearer, Newcastle entered the market in search of a replacement. They settled on Martins, a 21-year-old striker who was turning heads at Inter.
His first season was a productive one – Martins hit double figures for the Toon – but following the arrival of Mark Viduka the following summer, the Nigeria international found himself relegated to the bench often, and then ruled out altogether following a couple of injuries.
He returned to the Prem with Birmingham City, and left the Prem with 28 league goals.
Odemwingie was another who had a brief but memorable impact in the Premier League, arriving in 2010 and scoring 30 times for West Bromwich Albion over three seasons.
The terms of his eventual exit from The Hawthorns have since lent his spell there a less-than-flattering air, but he won multiple Premier League Player of the Month awards and, at one time, flirted with interest from Juventus.
He added a further six league goals with Stoke City and Cardiff City, and departed the league on 36 goals.
Celebrated for his hold-up play, and ridiculed – at times – for his lack of goal threat, Ameobi nonetheless netted 43 goals in the Premier League across 13 league seasons.
He became a cult hero at Newcastle United, and also represented Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup.
In the 90s, Ekoku notably turned out for Norwich and Wimbledon in the English top flight. The Manchester-born forward, a lithe, powerful runner with a good leap, became the first player to score more than three goals in the Premier League when he slammed four past Everton in 1993, and was a part of Nigeria’s squad to the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
He ended his time in the Prem with 52 league goals.
The most decorated Nigerian ever to play in the Premier League, Kanu won two Premier League titles with Arsenal and was a member of the Gunners’ iconic Invincibles side.
An elegant and unpredictable striker, the forward helped West Bromwich Albion avoid relegation after leaving North London, and then enjoyed immense success with Portsmouth – where he was an FA Cup winner in 2008.
Overall, he bagged 54 goals in the top flight.
Nigeria’s undisputed goalking in the Premier League, Yakubu bagged 95 goals in the top flight across his time with several clubs, proving to be a constant goal threat for opposition defences.
Ayegbeni remains vastly underrated for his ability and output in the Premier League. His exploits in the Champions League with Maccabi Haifa convinced Harry Redknapp’s promotion-chasing side to take a punt on the burly, barrel-chested forward that came to be known as the Yak.
His first season of Premier League football saw him notch 16 goals for Pompey, 11 of which came in the final stretch of the 2004/04 season.
He followed that up with 13 more the following season, and earned a move to Middlesbrough, where he spent two seasons and led the club to the final of the 2005 UEFA Cup.
In 2007, he joined Everton for a club record fee at the time. He quickly set about repaying the club’s fate, scoring on his debut against Bolton and finishing with 21 goals in all competitions for the Toffees.
A further spell at Blackburn in 2011/12 yielded 18 goals, but the Rovers were relegated at the end of the season and Yakubu elected to leave the club.
In all, he scored 96 goals in his time in the Premier League.
