Imam Abubakar who hid over 300 Christians during Plateau killings passes away

Abdullahi Abubakar, the Muslim cleric known for protecting hundreds of Christians during the 2018 sectarian violence in Plateau State, has passed away at the age of 92.

Abubakar, who served as Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, reportedly died following a brief illness.

A Beacon of Interfaith Courage

Abubakar rose to international prominence on June 23, 2018, when armed assailants attacked several communities in Barkin Ladi, claiming dozens of lives.

In the face of danger, he courageously sheltered over 300 Christians in his mosque and home, refusing to hand them over to the attackers despite threats to his own life.

“I did it because we are all human beings. My religion teaches me to protect lives, regardless of faith,” Abubakar said in interviews after the incident, reflecting his steadfast commitment to humanity and faith.

Recognition at Home and Abroad

In recognition of his bravery, the Nigerian government awarded Abubakar the national honor of Member of the Order of the Niger.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari personally commended his actions.

He was also named joint winner of the LEADERSHIP Media Group’s Person of the Year Award alongside businessman Aliko Dangote.

Internationally, the United States government presented him with the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019, hailing him as a champion of peace and interfaith unity.

Tributes from Plateau State

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described Abubakar’s passing as a “major loss” to his family, community, and the state.

He praised the cleric as a symbol of peace, unity, and selfless leadership.

“His leadership helped build bridges of forgiveness and peaceful coexistence across Plateau,” Mutfwang said in a statement, urging residents to continue upholding the values of compassion, tolerance, and unity exemplified by the late Imam.

Condolences and Legacy

The governor extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people of Plateau State, praying for comfort for the bereaved family.

Abubakar’s legacy as a courageous protector of lives and a promoter of interfaith harmony will be remembered both locally and internationally.
