Inmates allege hunger, ethnic bias, others inside Jos Custodial Centre

The Jos Custodial Centre in Plateau State has been accused of a disturbing pattern of neglect, abuse, and systemic deprivation reportedly suffered by inmates within the facility.

According to insider sources, the prison is grappling with severe shortages of necessities such as food and water, denial of medical care, and a toxic culture of intimidation allegedly enforced by select prison officials.

“People are dying in Jos Custodial Centre. There is no food, no water, no rights, and no privileges. Since last year, no meat, no fish. Just watery beans and other terrible food,” one source told SaharaReporters.

Photographic evidence shared with the media shows visibly substandard meals being served to inmates, plates of watery meals that appear lacking in nutritional value and dignity.

Medical neglect is also a major concern, with inmates alleging that the facility offers little to no healthcare.

“There is no good medical care. Since November 28, 2021, we have been treated like slaves,” another source lamented.

Among the most troubling claims is the emergence of a power structure reportedly centred around a single prison official, nicknamed “Abude,” who allegedly exerts undue influence over operations in the centre.

“It’s like a family prison now. Whatever Abude says, that is what the Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) does,” a source claimed.

Inmates further allege that control of the prison has become ethnically skewed, with key roles reportedly occupied by individuals from a particular ethnic group in Langtang, a locality in Plateau State. This, they say, has deepened feelings of marginalisation and bias within the already strained prison population.
