Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has advised the United States to approach renewed nuclear negotiations with Iran cautiously, warning that Tehran cannot be trusted to honour any agreement reached.
Netanyahu made the position clear during a meeting on Tuesday with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, as diplomatic efforts to revive talks over Iran’s nuclear programme gathered momentum.
According to a statement from the Israeli prime minister’s office, Netanyahu stressed that Iran has a long record of failing to keep its commitments.
“He made clear his position that Iran has repeatedly proven that its promises cannot be trusted,” the statement said.
Two Israeli officials confirmed that the meeting was also attended by the head of Israel’s intelligence agency David Barnea, Defence Minister Israel Katz and military chief Eyal Zamir.
The renewed talks come as Iran and the United States prepare to resume negotiations in Turkey. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that severe consequences could follow if no deal is reached.
Iranian sources previously indicated that Washington is pushing three main conditions for progress: zero uranium enrichment, restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile programme, and an end to Tehran’s support for regional proxy groups — demands that closely align with Israel’s long-standing position.
Tehran has consistently rejected all three conditions, describing them as violations of its sovereignty. However, Iranian officials have suggested that limitations on ballistic missiles pose a greater challenge than curbs on uranium enrichment.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with the United States increasing its military presence in the Middle East. The deployment of an aircraft carrier and supporting warships has heightened concerns over a possible confrontation if diplomacy fails.
The strained relations have been further compounded by Iran’s violent crackdown on recent protests, which rights groups say resulted in thousands of deaths. Iranian authorities have blamed the unrest on what they describe as armed groups backed by Israel and the United States.
