It’s an insult to Nigerians, rule of law for Tinubu to insist on implementing new tax law — Lawyer Adeyanju

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the planned implementation of Nigeria’s new Tax Reform Act from January 1, despite ongoing legal and political disputes.

Adeyanju faulted the President’s decision to proceed with the law, saying unresolved allegations surrounding its passage raise serious constitutional and governance concerns.

Concerns over alleged forgery and process breaches

The lawyer described the enforcement of the tax law amid claims of forgery and procedural violations as a direct attack on Nigeria’s legal system.

According to Adeyanju, pushing ahead with the policy without resolving the controversies undermines public trust in democratic institutions and the rule of law.

He also referenced claims that multiple versions of the Tax Reform Act exist within government circles.

Reports suggest the version reportedly prepared for gazetting differs from the document President Tinubu eventually signed into law.

Adeyanju raises NNPC debt questions

Reacting via a post on X, Adeyanju openly questioned the President’s authority to act unilaterally on key fiscal matters.

“For President Tinubu to insist on implementing the disputed Tax Reform Act from today Jan 1, despite the controversies and issues of forgery/breaches of the constitutional process is an insult to the Nigerian nation and the concept of rule of law,” he wrote.

He further asked, “Where did President Tinubu also get the power to unilaterally write off NNPC debts?”

The federal government has yet to issue an official response to Adeyanju’s claims as debate over the tax law continues nationwide.
