Jasprit Bumrah made a stunning return to international cricket, taking two wickets in his first over as India beat Ireland by seven wickets in a rain-hit Twenty20 international in Malahide.
Bumrah, who had not played for India since November 2021 due to a back injury, returned to the side in style, dismissing openers Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie in his first over.
India were then set a revised target of 109 runs from 12 overs after rain interrupted the match. They reached the target with ease, with opener Ishan Kishan top-scoring with 42 off 29 balls.
Bumrah finished with figures of 2-19 from four overs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3-15.
The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The second match will be played in Dublin on Sunday.
Bumrah’s return was a major boost for India, who have been looking for a world-class bowler to lead their attack in the absence of Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin.
The 28-year-old is one of the best bowlers in the world, and his presence will be a huge advantage for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Bumrah’s performance was also a major confidence boost for him, after a long spell on the sidelines. He will be hoping to continue his good form in the second match against Ireland and in the T20 World Cup.
The win was a good start for India’s tour of Ireland, which also includes two one-day internationals. They will be looking to build on their momentum and win the series.
