Jurgen Klopp has hit back at Frank Lampard’s claims that Liverpool are arrogant and told Chelsea’s head coach he has a lot to learn.
Lampard had a heated row with Liverpool’s bench during Wednesday’s game at Anfield in the moments after Sadio Mane had been brought down for a free-kick; he took Klopp’s assistant, Pep Lijnders, to task before confronting Liverpool’s manager.
Video footage emerged of the quarrel on Thursday during which Lampard could be heard swearing while Klopp told him to repeatedly ‘calm down’; Lampard was clearly irritated afterwards and while he said there was ‘no problem’ with the German some of the bench should not ‘get too arrogant.’
The accusation was not well received by Klopp. He did not have an issue with what happened on the touchline during his side’s 5-3 triumph but it was the words Lampard used in his post-match assessment that he was eager to address.
‘You hit me with something like that – or my bench with something like that – because we are not arrogant,’ said Klopp.
‘Frank was in a really competitive mood and I respect that a lot. You can pretty much, from my point of view, say in a situation like that what you want.
‘For me, it’s after the game. It’s completely over. I have said a lot in the past and, because it is pure emotion, he came here to win the game.
‘To get a point, to make sure of Champions League qualification. I respect that a lot. But what he has to learn is to finish it with the final whistle.
‘He didn’t do that. Speaking after it like this is not ok. Frank has to learn. He has a lot of time to learn, he is a young coach. But he has to learn. During a game, words are used – no problem at all. But at the final whistle, all the things he said… we are not arrogant.
‘We are pretty much the opposite of arrogant in a moment like this. If you have arguments, you say something and you want to hurt the other person.
‘That is how it is. But no problem. The final whistle? Close the book, finish the book. That is what I don’t like. I think it makes sense to explain.’
Liverpool play the final game of the campaign at Newcastle on Sunday and it will mark the end of the road for some of the title-winning squad; Adam Lallana is leaving, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to follow and Dejan Lovren is the subject of strong interest from Zenit St Petersburg.
The Russian side are closing in on an £11million move for Lovren but Klopp said: ‘As long as nothing is decided, we don’t speak about these things. If you don’t speak about the potential departure of a player, then we can’t speak about a potential replacement!
‘If there is something to say, then we will. But not at the moment, nothing. We will switch off for a few days, but the plans for the new season are already there and then we have an unbelievably intense season waiting for all of us.’
