A young lady has shared her unfortunate experience of being scammed by someone she met on Tinder. The story highlights how trust and excitement can be manipulated by online predators.
It all started in 2021 when she matched with a man named Jude on Tinder. Their conversations were great, and they quickly transitioned to chatting on WhatsApp. Jude claimed he was based in the UK and mentioned he would be visiting Nigeria for Christmas. He even offered to bring her gifts and asked what she would like. She requested a bag and a dress, and Jude promised to deliver.
A few days later, he told her he had already shipped the items, even sending her a tracking link. To her surprise, the package seemed much more elaborate than she expected. Along with the bag and dress, the tracking information showed an iPhone 11 Pro Max, shoes, perfume, chocolates, and more. Jude explained that the package had been shipped to Abuja instead of Lagos, so she needed to arrange home delivery herself.
She called the courier service and opted for delivery by road, paying ₦12,500. However, things quickly became suspicious. The courier called back, claiming the package couldn’t pass through the scanner due to its contents. Jude then revealed that he had placed £200 in cash in the package for her expenses—but also included some “drugs.” Alarmed but still trusting him, she paid an additional ₦35,000 to “settle” the situation.
The next day, a supposed delivery rider contacted her, saying he was on his way with her package. Hours passed, and when she called him, he claimed the police had stopped him, searched the package, and confiscated it after finding drugs. The rider demanded more money to retrieve the package, claiming it was a federal crime.
At this point, the lady became suspicious. She asked for the officer’s number and called, but the person on the line demanded ₦250,000 to release the package. Realizing the absurdity of the situation, she reached out to Jude—only to find that he had blocked her.
Reflecting on the incident, she described how the scam unraveled: “This idiot blocked me, and that was when it hit me—I had been scammed!”
Her story serves as a cautionary tale about being cautious with online relationships and transactions. Please, let’s all be careful out there.
